Today saw the announcement that after a year away from the British GT scene, Beechdean AMR are back to contest the GT3 title.
Double GT3 champion (2013 and 2015) team owner Andrew Howard is pairing up with Darren Turner (2017 Le Mans class winner) to drive the Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 in its familiar blue and white livery which was last seen in the British GT in 2016.
Howard is hoping to be the first driver to win three titles and with the support of Prodrive and their record in GT racing who could doubt this. Who better to share the seat than Turner who is known for his Aston Martin racing. Turner has been an Aston Martin factory driver since 2005 and has to his record three Le Mans class victories!
Given Turner’s GT experience, this will be his first full British GT season. His only one appearance was back in 2010 at Silverstone when he was again paired with Howard in a Barwell Motorsport Beechdean Aston Martin DBRS9 and finished third overall.
Howard and Turner paired up again for the last couple years competing in the ELMS and won the GTE title in 2016.
“It has been a long time since I’ve raced at many of the circuits on the British GT Championship calendar,” said Turner. “British GT has been booming for many years now and the depth of competition this year is equal to many of the international championships. With full, competitive grids, it’s going to be an exciting season for the drivers, the teams and of course the fans.
“Andrew has won the British GT Championship twice in the Vantage GT3 so he knows how strong the car is and how well it works on the British circuits. I’ve always really enjoyed the time I’ve spent behind the wheel of the GT3. With a 6-litre V12 up front how can you not enjoy driving that car?”
The British GT season starts off at Oulton Park 31st March – 2nd April before heading off around the country with its annual trip to Belgium in July before the season ending on September 22nd – 23rd at Donington Park.
