The annual Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship media day took place at Donington Park on Tuesday and it was the first time the public were able to see the new cars and drivers in action ahead of the curtain raiser at Brands Hatch in just over a weeks time.
The crowds came flocking in large numbers as they were eager to watch and see how their favourite drivers would get on around the parkland circuit for what would be a test session.
The day got underway in the morning with a number of media duties for all drivers and team personnel with some camera work for ITV out on the circuit. Once the crowds were let in around midday, they were treated to some touring car action with a four hour test session beginning at 1pm.
Unfortunately, the rain had come along just before the session got underway, which meant the session was for the first part, a damp one. However throughout the day the track conditions improved and it was eventually a dry session. Having the chance to test in both conditions were very useful to the teams as it gave them an opportunity to try out several different set ups with the cars.
The WIX Racing with Eurotech Honda Civic Type R of Jack Goff led for much of the day’s running before the HMS Racing Alfa Romeo of Rob Austin hit the front towards the end of the day. A late flurry of pace from the Motorbase pair of Tom Chilton and Sam Tordoff saw them finish the day in 2nd and 4th respectively, whilst the BMW machinery of Colin Turkington and Andrew Jordan finished in 3rd and 5th.
A number of drivers suffered wild moments during the day as the challenges of Donington Park became obvious. Goff himself spun in the gravel trap at Redgate, James Nash took an alternative route across the Craner Curves grass and Brett Smith followed suit later on in the day.
The competitiveness and high standard of drivers for 2018 is better than ever before and it’s not long now before the crowds flock to Brands Hatch in Kent for the highly anticipated season opener.
