Clio Cup: Bushell At The Double

Team Pyro’s Mike Bushell won the shortened second race of the weekend in the Renault UK Clio Cup.

Bushell was passed by PP Motorsport/Westbourne Motorsport’s James Colburn off the original race start. Unfortunately, the red flags were brought out to allow marshals to clear debris from the track and repair barriers. Westbourne Motorsport’s James Dorlin and Team Pyro’s Nathan Harrison had collected one another and crashed quite heavily into the barriers on the opening lap at Turn 1.

At the restart James Colburn led again until Bushell made his move at the Island Hairpin. DRM’s Daniel Rowbottom began putting pressure on Colburn which allowed Bushell to pull clear.

After just two laps the race was red flagged and then chequered flagged after a heavy accident for Team Pyro’s Jack McCarthy. The youngster suffered multiple rolls at the high speed Druids Bend part of the circuit.

The top three drivers on the timing screens read Mike Bushell in 1st, James Colburn in 2nd and Daniel Rowbottom in 3rd. WDE Motorsport’s Dan Zelos and Ciceley Motorsport’s Max Coates were classified in 4th and 5th. Coates had to work hard to keep WDE Motorsport’s Lee Pattison behind in 6th.

Seventh place went to SDR’s Shayne Deegan in a slightly damaged car. Ciceley Motorsport’s Jade Edwards was forced to retire her car with damage.

James Dorlin, Nathan Harrison and Jack McCarthy’s bad luck meant Deegan was the highest-placed finisher in the Graduates Cup. WDE’s Paul Rivett finished in 8th ahead of Ciceley Motorsport’s Luke Read in 9th and Team Pyro’s Kyle Hornby rounded out the top ten.

Ciceley Motorsport’s Sam Osborne finished in 11th and also picked up the two bonus points for setting the fastest lap of the race. JamSport’s Graham Field and Aaron Thompson finished in 12th and 13th. WDE’s Nicolas Hamilton finished in 14th ahead of JamSport’s Lucas Orrock in 15th.

Thompson and Hamilton were delayed when they tangled and spun off on the opening lap of the restart. Lucas Orrock was delayed during the restarted race as he had to avoid multiple incidents.
