Callum Ilott (Prema Powerteam) claimed a convincing victory in Race 1 at Spielberg, ahead of Joel Eriksson (Motopark) and Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam).

At the start, Eriksson moved into second place ahead of Günther and had a go at getting past pole sitter Ilott into Turn 2 but the British driver held position.

In the midfield pack, Harrison Newey (Van Amersfoort Racing) bumped into Nikita Mazepin (Hitech GP) under braking for Turn 2, resulting in the latter’s retirement with suspension damage.

In what was a mostly uneventful contest, Ilott fended off the Swede and built up a small gap en route to a comfortable win.

Eriksson and Günther completed the podium with the battle for fourth battle between championship leader Lando Norris (Carlin) beating Tadasuke Makino (Hitech GP) proving to be the only true encounter of the race.

Norris initially conceded the position to Makino on the opening lap, and with three laps to go, the two of them went wheel to wheel around multiple corners and ended with the Japanese driver being forced off line and yielding the position to Norris.

Speaking after the race, race winner Ilott discussed events from his point of view: “It’s been a really good weekend so far, I’ve always really enjoyed this track – it’s probably my favourite to get a trophy on for some other reasons! (He left the Red Bull junior scheme in 2015).

“I struggled a bit off the line, and Joel was able to challenge me, but he snatched a wheel and went straight and I was able to get a better exit.”
