European F3: Norris dominates first race at Zandvoort

Source: FIA F3 European Championship

Lando Norris (Carlin) produced a dominate win to boost his title charge ahead of his championship contenders Joel Eriksson (Motopark) and Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam).

Norris got a great start from pole position to lead into the Tarzan corner, whilst Eriksson and Günther both got past Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin).

Behind them, there was a three-car incident which saw Guanyu Zhou (Prema Powerteam), hit Ralf Aron (Hitech GP), went off the track and collided with David Beckmann (Motopark), the latter of whom landed upside down in the gravel trap.

Thankfully, none of the drivers were injured and Zhou was given a drive through penalty for causing the incident whilst the marshals cleared the track under the safety car.

At the restart, Eriksson got a good run out of the Arie Luyendijk corner onto the pit straight and attempted a manoeuvre on Norris into Tarzan, but couldn’t find a way past.

Subsequently, his allowed Norris to pull away and calmly claim his sixth win of the season, ahead of Eriksson and Günther, with Habsburg holding off Callum Ilott (Prema Powerteam) at the line for fourth.

After the race, Norris reflected on his overall performance: “The most important thing for the race was that I started from pole position and was able to take the lead at the start, because overtaking is almost impossible at this track.”

“My restart after the safety car wasn’t perfect, but it was enough to keep Joel at bay. After that, I could pull away more and more and score valuable points with this victory. Too bad that my team-mate Ferdinand Habsburg started from the slightly more damp side of the track and therefore dropped out of the top 3.”
