This weekend, the FIA Formula Three European Championship makes its way to Zandvoort, as a four-way battle brews at the front of the pack in the drivers’ championship.
Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) currently has an 18-point lead over series rookie Lando Norris (Carlin), with Joel Eriksson (Motopark) a further 8 points back.
Callum Ilott is a distant fourth in the drivers’ standings and will need a strong performance to keep his slim title chances intact.
Günther claimed two podiums in last year’s races at Zandvoort, including victory in race three, whilst Ilott’s best finish was a third place in race two. In contrast, Eriksson struggled at the dunes, with a best finish of seventh in race three.
The Swede’s qualifying performances in recent races have cost him valuable points and he cannot afford a repeat this weekend.
Norris will be looking to develop upon his strong showing at the recent Formula One test at the Hungaroring for McLaren-Honda to carry momentum into the weekend.
Norris finished day two of testing second behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, only 0.261 seconds behind after completing 91 laps.
Force India’s development driver Nikita Mazepin (Hitech GP) also took part in the test, clocking 100 laps across the two days, whilst Ameya Vaidyanathan (Carlin) will looking to build on his series debut last time out at Spa-Francorchamps.
All the practice and qualifying sessions, in addition to the races, will be streamed live on the official FIA Formula Three European Championship YouTube channel over the course of the weekend.
