Pierre Gasly (Team Mugen) claimed a second consecutive win in this year’s Super Formula Championship, establishing himself as a strong title contender in the process.

At the start of the race, Tomoki Nojiri (Docomo Team Dandelion Racing) led into Turn 1 from pole position, with Gasly moving up to second from fifth on the grid having opted to start on the soft tyre rather the medium used by those around the Frenchman.

Behind them, André Lotterer (Vantelin Team Tom’s) stalled from fourth and retired soon after, denting the German’s championship hopes in the process.

On Lap 5, Felix Rosenqvist (SUNOCO Team Le Mans), who started tenth, pitted for fuel and changed onto the soft tyres and began to make his up the field.

Koudai Tsukakoshi (Real Racing), who started at the back of the grid in nineteenth, was on the charge and put on an impressive display to move up to fourth place by Lap 14.

The yellow flag was out six laps later when Nick Cassidy (Kondō Racing) crashed into the tyre barrier at the exit of Turn 9.

Gasly switched onto the medium tyre on Lap 24 and came out in third ahead of Rosenqvist and behind Nojiri and Defending champion Yuji Kunimoto (P.MU/CERUMO・INGING); both of whom had yet to make their mandatory pit stop.

Nojiri pitted on Lap 39 and had a slow stop due to an issue with fuelling up his car. Kunimoto did the same a lap later and as the latter re-joined the track, Kamui Kobayashi (KCMG) was hit by Nojiri into Turn 1.

As a result, Nojiri needed to pit for a new front wing and eventually finished in

This left Gasly unchallenged at the finish line to collect his second win of the season – the first driver to do so this season.

Rosenqvist finished close behind in second with team-mate Kazuya Oshima (SUNOCO Team Le Mans) in third, whilst Hiroaki Ishiura (P.MU/CERUMO・INGING) held off a late charge from his team-mate Kunimoto and Kazuki Nakajima (Vantelin Team Tom’s) to take fourth place.

Kobayashi beat Jann Mardenborough (Itochu Enex Team Implu) to the line for seventh, with Tsukakoshi and Yuhi Sekiguchi (Itochu Enex Team Implu) rounding up the top ten.

The weekend’s sees Gasly move into second in the drivers’ standings on 25 points, cutting Ishiura’s championship lead to five and a half points.

Rosenqvist is close behind in third on 24.5 points, ahead of the Vantelin Team Tom’s pairing of Lotterer and Nakajima.

The next round of the championship will see the drivers head to Sportsland Sugo later this month before a double header in the season finale at Suzuka next month.
