Team Mugen’s Pierre Gasly took his debut win in Super Formula at Twin Ring Motegi, ahead of Kamui Kobayashi (KCMG) and Felix Rosenqvist (SUNOCO Team Le Mans).

Before the race took place, qualifying was completed following a stoppage after the Q1 session the previous day due to heavy rainfall on the circuit.

Kenta Yamashita (Kondō Racing) was fastest with a 1:32.030, ahead of Kobayashi. Tomoki Nojiri (Docomo Team Dandelion Racing) and Gasly were on row two, with Nick Cassidy (Kondō Racing) and Rosenqvist on row three.

At the start of the race, Kobayashi got the better run off the line and pulled away ahead of Nojiri and Yamashita.

On Lap 10, Yamashita was the first of the front runners to make the mandatory pit stop for tyres, whilst the KCMG team were experiencing issues with Kobayashi’s radio. As a result, the former Formula 1 driver stayed out longer before pitting on Lap 34.

During the stop, his mechanics had an issue with securing the wheel nut on the right rear tyre and lost the lead to Gasly.

This allowed the Red Bull junior driver to claim his first Super Formula win by eighteen seconds, ahead of Kobayashi and Rosenqvist.

Hiroaki Ishiura, who won at the previous round at Fuji, performed an extraordinary comeback from 16th on the grid to finish in fourth, and maintains his lead in the Drivers’ Championship ahead of André Lotterer (Vantelin Team Tom’s), who collided with Takuya Izawa (Docomo Team Dandelion Racing) en route to seventh place.

Ahead of Lotterer at the line was Cassidy in fifth whilst pole sitter Yamashita could only manage sixth.
