Brent Marks was victorious in last night’s World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Feature at Weedsport Speedway. Marks, who started from pole after winning the 6-lap Dash qualifying race earlier in the evening, went on to lead all 35 laps of the evening’s feature race.
After getting out to an early lead Marks reached lap traffic by Lap 5, by the time the chequered flag flew Marks had put more than half the field a lap down.
Despite leading all 35 laps, Marks didn’t completely walk away with the win, as he had to fight off a hard charge from Sheldon Haudenschild and Jacob Allen.
Haudenschild, who started fourth in Sunday’s feature, made his way past Allen on Lap 24 and set his sights on Marks and the race lead.
While lap traffic bunched the lead pack up quite a bit in the closing stages of the race, every time Haudenschild tried to make a pass Marks was able to shut the door, en route to his second career victory.
“That was a lot of fun with the track being so technical, getting through turn[s] 1 and 2 was so tricky,” said an ecstatic Marks in Victory Lane.
Marks wasn’t the only driver who had difficulty in Turns 1 and 2, earlier in the evening series’ points leader Donny Schatz hit the wall in Turn 2 on the first lap of his qualifying effort.
After starting the Feature race in 15th position, Schatz brought the heat as he made his way up to sixth in the non-stop race.
Sunday’s race marked Schatz’s 41st top-ten finish in 43 races this season, he currently holds a 202-point lead over Brad Sweet in second place in the championship.
As the calendar flips to August, the series will start to turn its attention to the biggest event of the season, the 58th running of the Knoxville Nationals which take place August 8th to 11th.
