Julien Andlauer withstood early pressure from series rookie Ayhancan Güvan, to win the opening round of the 2019 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
Güvan held off veteran and current champion Michael Ammermüller in the closing laps to take second and score a podium in his maiden weekend.
Andlauer had to survive immense pressure from Güvan at the start. The Turk almost led when attempting an audacious overtake around the outside and touched in the process.
Andlauer survived the first of many onslaughts by Güvan, until the Safety Car was brought out. Michael Verhagen had spun and resulted in those behind him having to take evasive action.
This caused Clement Mateu to swerve suddenly to dodge Vergaen’s car, but the Frenchman’s reactions were too late. Consequently, the ProAM driver beached his 911 in the gravel trap.
Racing resumed on Lap 7, with Güvan still looking for a way past Andlauer. However, the restart proved to be the Turkish rookie’s last chance to challenge for victory, as the Frenchman extended his lead.
Güvan now had to look in his mirrors and focus on the advances of Ammermüller in third. The rookie soaked up the immense pressure created by the BWT Lechner Racing driver until Lap 11.
Ammermüller created a passing opportunity heading into Turn 4, but Güvan remained unnerved and placed his car on the racing line.
Behind the podium finishers, Mikkel O. Pedersen once again to miss out on his first ever podium. Cypriot driver Tio Ellinas passed the Dane at Turn 7 for fourth place and forced him wide.
To add to Pedersen’s disappointment, this allowed Dutch driver Jaap Van Lagen through to claim fifth position.
